Dharmapuri and Salem districts recorded the highest polling while Chennai voters turned up the least in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections conducted on Moday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Election Officer Rajesh Lakhoni, while addressing a press conference, said the final figure of the State's voter turnout will be known only by 8 p.m.
The highest turnout was recorded from Edappadi and Pennagaram constituencies (85 per cent) while the lowest was in Harbour (53 p.c.) and Villivakkam (54 p.c.).
While polling concluded in most booths, it is still on in others. Voters who have reached their respective polling booths by 6 p.m. have been issued tokens and will be allowed to exercise their franchise.In Hill areas, the voting ended and the voter turnout are still awaited.arly in the morning, some of the EVMs were changed due to malfunctioning, Mr. Lakhoni said.While asked about the Exit polls, Mr. Lakhoni said they can be published after 6 p.m.The polling was by and large peaceful. Police arrested a man who attempted to damage ballot unit in a polling station in Ramnad district but polling was not disrupted.Mr. Lakhoni also said that one polling official died due to cardiac arrest and another was changed for wrongly recording a visually handicapped person's vote.In Chennai, the turnout in the forenoon session was rapid but it was sluggish in the afternoon session.Mr. Lakhoni said that three tier security will be up at the counting centres and CCTV cameras will be monitoring the EVM strong rooms.The EVMs will be sealed in front of the polling agents and will be taken to the counting centres.
